Overnight Trains: When They Save You a Day and When They Cost You One

The arrival-time problem nobody writes about, the routes that arrive at a civilised hour, and the one Nightjet route that no longer exists.

Best for
Anyone planning a European or South-East Asian route with a long leg in it.
Not ideal for
Light sleepers. Be honest with yourself about this before you book.

The claim, and what is missing from it

The case for the night train is always stated the same way: you sleep while you travel, so you gain a day and save a hotel night.

That is true on some routes and false on others, and the thing that decides it is not the journey time. It is the arrival time.

A train that puts you in a city at 06:37, when your hotel will not check you in until the afternoon, has not given you a day. It has moved your dead time from the train to a station café, and made you tired for it.

The arrival times that matter

Here is the timetable data that settles the argument, for the flagship ÖBB Nightjet routes.

Vienna → BerlinNJ 45622:1007:46~9h 36m
Berlin → ViennaNJ 45718:0606:37~12h 31m

Look at the split.

The long routes — Vienna–Rome at 14 hours, Vienna–Amsterdam at 15 to 16 hours — arrive between 09:48 and 10:05. You wake up, you have breakfast on the train, you step off into the morning, you drop your bags and the day is yours.

The short routes arrive at 06:37 and 07:46. That is a full working day of waiting before a room exists.

"Night trains arrive at 6am" is repeated everywhere and it is not true of the routes where it matters most.

The route that no longer exists

ÖBB discontinued the Vienna–Paris and Berlin–Paris Nightjet services from 14 December 2025. The French transport ministry declined to extend its service contracts with SNCF Voyageurs into 2026, and both routes were joint ÖBB/SNCF operations. Vienna–Paris ran for less than four years.

Vienna to Brussels continues, three times a week.

A lot of blogs and a lot of AI answers still recommend it. If your route plan has Vienna to Paris by sleeper in it, it needs rebuilding.

What it costs

New-generation Nightjet stock:

**Accommodation****From**
Seat€29.20
Couchette or private mini cabin€58.20
Bed in a 2-bed sleeper, per person€107.40
Single sleeper€159.00

Classic Nightjet stock:

**Accommodation****From**
Couchette, 6-berth€49
Couchette, 4-berth€59
Bed in 2-bed sleeper€89
Single-bed sleeper€129
Private family compartment€199+

Zurich–Amsterdam, from the operator: seats from €35, couchettes from €50, a sleeping compartment from €80, arriving Zurich shortly after 08:00.

Fares are dynamic. They rise as the date approaches. Booking opens 180 days ahead, though ÖBB notes that dates after the mid-December timetable change may have a shorter window, and international sleepers have historically opened later than the stated six months.

The mini cabin is the product worth knowing about

On new-generation Nightjet stock, a private single mini cabin costs €58.20 — exactly the same as a bed in a shared 4-berth couchette.

It is an enclosed pod with a pillow, sheet, blanket, reading light, power outlet, USB and wireless charging.

A private room for the price of a shared bunk. For a 30-to-65-year-old professional who was never going to enjoy sharing a compartment with three strangers, this changes the calculation entirely, and it is barely covered anywhere.

The saved-hotel-night sum nobody has actually done

Everyone repeats the claim. Rick Steves puts it well — "for every night you spend on the train, you gain a day for sightseeing and avoid the cost of a hotel" — and attaches no numbers to it.

The two most substantial recent studies do not do the calculation.

  • Greenpeace, "Flying Cheap, Paying Dear", August 2025 — 142 routes across 31 European countries, including 29 where a night train is the only reasonable rail option. It compares base ticket prices only.
  • Back-on-Track / Transport & Environment, Night Trains Briefing, June 2023 — models three passenger scenarios but evaluates only the train ticket.

So here is the sum, and you fill in the last two numbers for your own dates:

Night train fare versus day train fare + one hotel night + one day of your trip

What the verified fares tell you is that the night-train side of that equation — €49 to €58 for a couchette or mini cabin — is roughly the price of one mid-range hotel night on its own. Which means the day-train fare and the day of your trip are close to pure saving, when the arrival time works.

When the arrival time does not work, you have paid for a bad night's sleep and a morning in a station.

What the same study says about the price argument

Worth knowing, because it cuts against the romance.

Greenpeace found that only 39% of 109 cross-border European routes were cheaper by train than by plane, against 70% of domestic routes. In France, Spain and the UK, over 90% of routes were cheaper to fly. Some of the gaps are extreme: Barcelona to London at €14.99 by air against €389 by rail.

Their own conclusion on sleepers: "Compared to the fares of low-cost airlines, night trains are rarely cheaper."

Take the night train because of what it does to your day count, not because you think it is cheap. On many routes it is not.

Overnight trains in Asia

Vietnam — the Reunification Express

Full Hanoi to Saigon fares:

**Class****Fare****Approx**
Soft seat, air-conditioned~1,026,000đUS\$41
Hard sleeper, 6-berth a/c1,273,000–1,637,000đUS\$51–65
Soft sleeper, 4-berth a/c1,667,000–1,758,000đUS\$67–70
VIP 2-berth cabinroughly double soft sleeper~US\$135

VIP 2-berth compartments run only on SE1 and SE2, with roughly four beds per train. If you want one, book early.

Reservations open 60 days ahead — much shorter than Europe.

The leg worth taking is Hanoi to Da Nang. Train SE3 departs 19:20 and arrives 10:36 — a civilised arrival, in time for a Hoi An check-in. Train SE1 departs 20:50 and arrives 12:12. Avoid SE5, which arrives at 01:31.

The leg not worth taking is Da Nang to Saigon — 17 to 18 hours against a 1 hour 35 minute flight with around 30 departures a day.

Thailand — Bangkok to Chiang Mai

The trains to want are 9 and 10, which use the newer Chinese-built sleeping cars with power sockets and a dining car.

**Class****Fare**
1st class, lower berth1,646฿
1st class, upper berth1,446฿
2nd class a/c, lower berth1,038฿
2nd class a/c, upper berth938฿

Trains 13 and 14 are cheaper and slower.

First class is a lockable air-conditioned 2-berth compartment with a washbasin. Berths are sold individually, so a solo traveller shares unless they pay for sole occupancy.

Note the booking window changed in 2026. The State Railway of Thailand cut advance sales from 180 days to 90 days, announced in late April 2026. Most guides still say 180.

\[VERIFY: journey time for train 9. Two sources conflict — one gives 18:40 to 07:15, about 12h 35m; another gives roughly 17.5 hours.\]

\[VERIFY: Thai fares are labelled 2023 on the source. Re-check.\]

The lower-berth rule

In both Vietnam and Thailand, lower berths cost more than upper berths, and they are worth it. You get the window, more headroom, and you are not climbing down in the dark. The premium is small.

When to take the overnight train

Take it when:

  • The arrival is after 09:00
  • The journey is long enough that the daytime alternative would eat a whole day anyway
  • The alternative flight involves two awkward airport transfers
  • A private mini cabin or a 2-berth sleeper is available at a price you would have paid for a hotel
  • The leg substitutes for a night you would otherwise pay for — Hanoi to Da Nang is the cleanest example on any route in this set

Do not take it when:

  • It arrives before 08:00 and you have no plan for the morning
  • The daytime alternative is under four hours
  • There is a short flight with good frequency and the total door-to-door difference is under three hours
  • You sleep badly on trains. A bad night on day three of a fourteen-day trip costs you day four as well
  • It is the only sleeper of the week and it pins your whole itinerary to one date

If the answer is no, what instead

A daytime train, deliberately scheduled. A 10:00 departure arriving 15:00 costs you an afternoon, and you keep the previous evening and a full night's sleep.

A short flight with an early departure. Not a red-eye. An 08:00 flight arriving 10:00 gives you the same day the sleeper would have and you slept in a bed.

Remove the leg. If the only way to make two cities work is a fourteen-hour overnight train, the honest answer is often that they belong in different trips.

Common mistakes

Booking a sleeper without checking the arrival time. The whole decision turns on it.

Assuming the night train is cheaper. On most cross-border European routes it is not.

Booking Vienna to Paris. It stopped running in December 2025.

Booking a 6-berth couchette to save €9 over a private mini cabin. On new-generation stock the mini cabin is the same price as a 4-berth.

Taking the Da Nang to Saigon sleeper. Seventeen hours against a 95-minute flight.

Booking Vietnamese sleepers more than 60 days out. The window is not open yet.

Reading a 180-day Thai booking window. It has been 90 days since April 2026.

What needs checking before this is published

1. Train 9 Bangkok–Chiang Mai journey time. Two sources give roughly 12h 35m and roughly 17.5 hours. Unresolved and the article does not state a duration.

2. Thai SRT fares are explicitly 2023-dated on the source.

3. Vietnamese fares are from Seat61, not Vietnam Railways, and dong figures drift against the dollar.

4. Nightjet fares are all from Seat61. ÖBB's own site requires a live search and publishes no euro table.

5. Nightjet timings are from Back-on-Track, a rail advocacy body with accurate but third-party data. Verify against nightjet.com — ÖBB timings shift at the December timetable change.

6. Zurich–Amsterdam departure time. NS International's official page renders it as "11:50", which cannot be right for an overnight service.

7. Standard hotel check-in times. Referenced throughout as the reason early arrivals are a problem, but no citable source was obtained. The article avoids stating a specific hour.

8. SRT 90-day rule effective date. Sources give 24 and 30 April 2026.

9. Opportunity flagged: no published study completes the saved-hotel-night calculation. Bella-Ruta could run the sum on three named routes with live hotel prices and be the first credible source on it. That is a separate piece of work and a strong one.
