The Bella-Ruta 10-Day South Korea Route: Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan

A 10-day first Korea route, with the night split, the KTX legs, the station trap nobody warns you about, and whether the rail pass is worth it.

Best for
A first trip to Korea, 9–12 days, self-booked.
Not ideal for
Anyone with fewer than 8 days, or anyone who wants Jeju in the same trip.

The shape of the problem

Korea is a small country with one very fast train running down the middle of it.

That makes it one of the easiest multi-city trips in Asia to route, and one of the easiest to over-fill. People try to fit Seoul, Gyeongju, Busan, Jeonju, Andong and Jeju into ten days, because each hop looks short on the map.

Ten days away is about 7.5 usable days once you subtract the flights and the jet lag. That is a three-city trip. Not six.

The route

Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan. North to south, in one direction, on one rail line.

Seoul is the arrival hub and has the most direct long-haul flights. Gyeongju sits roughly two-thirds of the way down. Busan is at the bottom. Every leg moves you forward.

The 10-day night split

DaysWhereNightsWhy
1–5Seoul4You lose most of day one. Four nights gives three real days.
5–7Gyeongju2Small, walkable, low-rise. Two nights is enough.
7–10Busan3Two full days, then out.

Nine nights, ten days away.

If you only have nine days, take a night off Seoul, not off Gyeongju. Gyeongju at one night is a stopover, not a visit.

How you get between them

All times and fares checked 20 August 2026. Adult, one way, standard class.

LegTrainTimeFare
Seoul → SingyeongjuKTX, direct2h00–3h15₩49,300
Singyeongju → BusanKTX27–34 min₩11,000
Seoul → Busan (for comparison)KTX2h23–3h24₩59,800

Frequency is not a constraint. Seoul to Singyeongju runs 25 to 31 trains a day, first departure 05:13, last 21:33. Singyeongju to Busan runs 34 to 41 a day.

The station trap

Gyeongju Station and Singyeongju Station are two different stations.

The old Gyeongju Station in the town centre no longer takes through traffic. KTX and SRT services use Singyeongju, which sits roughly 10 to 12 kilometres outside the old town.

Several booking sites label Singyeongju as "Gyeongju". At least one aggregator returns a Gyeongju–Busan page showing Dongdaegu's address as the departure point. Book Singyeongju and know that you have a transfer at the other end.

From Singyeongju into central Gyeongju:

  • Bus — routes 700, 50, 51, 60, 61, 70, 203 and 332 serve the station. 20–30 minutes, every 10–20 minutes. [VERIFY: fare. Sources give ₩1,500 and ₩2,500.]
  • Taxi — 15–20 minutes, ₩13,000–16,000. Kakao T works.

KTX or SRT?

Two operators run high-speed trains in Korea, and they leave from different stations in Seoul.

  • KTX is Korail. It leaves from Seoul Station, central.
  • SRT is a separate company. It leaves from Suseo, in the south-east, roughly an hour by metro from the centre.

SRT is cheaper — Suseo to Busan is ₩53,200 against KTX's ₩59,800, a ₩6,600 saving. The extra metro time and fare to Suseo usually cancels that out. Take SRT only if you are staying in Gangnam or south-east Seoul. Otherwise take KTX from Seoul Station.

The Korea Rail Pass does not pay for itself on this route

Here is the sum.

Point to point: Seoul → Singyeongju ₩49,300, plus Singyeongju → Busan ₩11,000. Total ₩60,300.

The cheapest adult KORAIL PASS is ₩131,000, for any two days within a ten-day window.

Even if you added a Busan → Seoul return at ₩59,800, you would be at ₩120,100 — still ₩10,900 under the cheapest pass.

The pass also excludes SRT, all city subways, and the airport railway, and it limits you to two seat reservations a day.

Buy point-to-point tickets. The pass starts to make sense on itineraries with four or more long high-speed legs in a short window — adding Gangneung, Mokpo or Yeosu, for example. Not on a straight run south.

[VERIFY: the KORAIL PASS price table. Adult 2-day flexible ₩131,000, 3-day consecutive ₩165,000, 4-day flexible ₩234,000, 5-day consecutive ₩244,000 — single source only. Confirm on korail.com. The verdict above holds under any plausible price revision.]

Airports and getting into town

Incheon (ICN) into Seoul. The AREX Express runs non-stop to Seoul Station: 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 minutes from Terminal 2, ₩13,000, every 20–40 minutes. The all-stop commuter service takes 59 and 66 minutes and costs roughly ₩4,250–4,750.

Note: the official VisitSeoul page still lists the Express at ₩9,500. That price is out of date.

Gimhae (PUS) in Busan. Light rail to Sasang, then Metro Line 2, then Line 1. Roughly 45 minutes to Busan Station, about ₩2,800, with two changes. Taxi is 30–45 minutes and ₩20,000–30,000.

The light rail stops running at around 23:00. A late arrival means a taxi.

A Busan Metro 1-day pass is ₩6,000; three days is ₩13,000.

Where to fly into and out of

In: Incheon (ICN).

Out: this needs a fare check, not a rule. Gimhae serves Japan, China, Taiwan and South-East Asia well, but it has no long-haul service. Flying home from Busan almost certainly means a connection.

So run both options:

  • Open-jaw, ICN in / PUS out. You skip the return leg entirely, but you add a connection to your journey home.
  • Round trip into ICN, and take the KTX back from Busan to Seoul on your last morning. That leg is 2h23. It is not a lost day the way a five-hour journey would be — it is a lost morning.

On a ten-day trip the second option is often the better trade. This is the one route in the Bella-Ruta set where the round trip can beat the open-jaw, and it is worth saying so.

[VERIFY: current long-haul connection options from Gimhae for your home airport.]

Booking the trains

Korail tickets go on sale 30 days before departure, at 07:00 Korean time. Sales close 20 minutes before the train leaves.

You do not need a Korean phone number, a Korean ID or a Korean bank account. Book as a non-member on Korail's English site using your passport details and an overseas credit card. Seat selection works for non-member bookings.

Use korail.com. Not letskorail.com — Korail merged the old site into the main one in February 2025.

Two things that go wrong: overseas cards decline when 3D-Secure is not enabled with your bank, and the site often fails without explaining why. If it will not take your card, book through a reseller at a small markup rather than fighting it.

Entry requirements

K-ETA is currently waived for 22 countries and regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand and a list of European states. The waiver runs 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026.

But the e-Arrival Card is mandatory. From 1 January 2026 all foreign travellers not entering on a K-ETA must submit it online within three days before arrival.

There is a quirk worth knowing. Travellers who are K-ETA exempt may still apply for one voluntarily — ₩10,000, valid three years — specifically to be exempted from the arrival card. Whether that is worth ₩10,000 is your call.

[VERIFY: confirm no amendment has been posted since December 2025, and confirm the 22-country list on the official K-ETA portal.]

Common routing mistakes

Booking Gyeongju Station instead of Singyeongju. Covered above.

Buying the rail pass because a blog recommended it. It loses by roughly ₩70,000 on this route.

Adding Jeju. Jeju is an island and a flight. It turns a clean three-stop line into a hub-and-spoke trip with two extra airport days. It belongs in a separate trip, or in a 16-day one.

Giving Gyeongju one night. You arrive mid-afternoon after the transfer from the station and leave the next morning. That is not a visit.

Landing at Incheon and taking a taxi. ₩31,000 to ₩58,500 plus tolls, 40–100 minutes, against ₩13,000 and 43 minutes on a train.

Alternative routes

12–14 days: add Jeonju between Seoul and Gyeongju, two nights. It sits roughly on the line and does not force a backtrack.

8 days: cut Gyeongju. Seoul 4 nights, Busan 3. One journey, 2h23. Simple and it works.

Korea plus Japan: see article 10. Busan is 55 minutes' flight from Fukuoka, which makes it a natural border crossing rather than an endpoint.

Final booking checklist

  • Priced ICN-in / PUS-out against a round trip into ICN plus a KTX back
  • Booked Singyeongju, not Gyeongju
  • Diarised 30 days before your first KTX leg, 07:00 Korean time
  • Booked on korail.com, as a non-member if the membership flow demands a Korean number
  • Checked 3D-Secure is enabled on the card you will use
  • Submitted the e-Arrival Card within 3 days of arrival
  • Confirmed the K-ETA waiver still covers your passport

What needs checking before this is published

  • Singyeongju city bus fare. Sources give ₩1,500 and ₩2,500. No official Gyeongju City page was readable.
  • KORAIL PASS price table. One source only, and the consecutive-versus-flexible structure is contradicted by another reseller. Confirm on korail.com.
  • Seoul–Singyeongju ₩49,300 and Singyeongju–Busan ₩11,000. From a live-data mirror, not Korail's own published table. Korail's official English site is a JavaScript app that could not be read. Run a dummy search on korail.com to confirm.
  • K-ETA: confirm no post-December-2025 amendment, and confirm the 22-country list on the official portal, which was unreachable.
  • Long-haul connections from Gimhae for the article's target home airports.
  • AREX Express ₩13,000. Four 2026 sources agree, but the official AREX site was unreachable and the official VisitSeoul page contradicts them with a stale ₩9,500.
  • Anny's call: whether to publish the "round trip may beat the open-jaw here" line. It contradicts the general Bella-Ruta position on open-jaw flights, and it is correct on this specific route. Recommend keeping it — being right in the exception is what makes the rule credible.
